    Alliance internationale des éditeurs indépendants

    The International Alliance of Independent Publishers is a non-for-profit association. Consisting of 85 publishing houses and publishers’ cooperatives in 45 countries, it represents nearly 360 publishing houses.

     

    The Alliance organises international meetings and undertakes actions to promote the independence of publishers. It supports international publishing projects and contributes to promoting and disseminating work from less developed countries.

  • Bureau International de l'Edition Française

    Bureau international de l’édition française (BIEF)

    The Bureau international de l'édition française is the common operator for publishers and public authorities for the promotion of exports, rights exchanges and international partnerships in publishing.

     

    It represents French publishing at international fairs and congresses, organises professional meetings and educational events and produces market analyses of foreign book publishing markets as well as catalogues of French books whose rights are available.

     

    Its Lettre du Bief newsletter and website provide foreign professionals with news about publishing in France and abroad.

     

    BIEF also operates in the United States through the French Publisher’s Agency (www.frenchrights.com/USA).

  • Centre National du Livre

    Centre national du livre (CNL)

    Founded in 1946, the National Book Centre is a public agency in France's Ministry of Culture and Communication, operating within the General Media and Cultural Activities Department.

     

    The CNL’s mission is to support all actors in the book publishing chain including authors, broadcasters, publishers, bookshops, libraries, and literary events organisers. To do so it offers a wide range of aid totalling some €42 million a year in the form of subsidies, credits, grants, and zero-rate loans, which are allocated after consulting specialist committees.

     

    CNL operates both in France and abroad. Focused on fairness and reciprocity, it strives to promote French literature on the international stage and foreign literature in France in return. It thus offers a forum for welcoming, informing, mediating, and exchanging visions globally, accessible to all.

    Institut français (IF)

    The French Institute is a public arm of France’s Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs.

     

    Its mission to promote French culture internationally through artistic exchanges (live shows, visual arts, architecture), books, film, French language, knowledge and ideas.
    The Institute encourages other world cultures in France by organising “seasons” or festivals and by working with less developed countries. It also runs a series of international residency programmes in France and internationally.

     

    The Institute works in close cooperation with the French cultural network abroad which consists of over 150 Institut français and nearly 1,000 Alliances françaises cultural networks around the world as well as providing training for that network.

    Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication (MCC) : Direction générale des médias et des industries culturelles et Service du Livre et de la Lecture

    The General Media & Cultural Activities Service (Direction Générale des Médias et des Industries Culturelles) defines, coordinates and evaluates the Government’s policy to develop pluralism in media, the advertising industry, and all communication services to the public in electronic, audio, and book publishing form as well as general literacy and culture.

     

    Through the Books & Literacy Service, it encourages public literacy, aims at conserving, enriching and making the most of library assets, and participates in developing the book publishing industry in France and abroad. It also monitors developments in digital technology.

  • Les bureaux du livre des Ambassades de France à l’étranger

    The cultural services of French Embassies abroad

    The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has a network of diplomatic posts based all around the world.

     

    The various agencies of this cultural and cooperative network – the French Institutes and the Cultural Action and Cooperation Services – run cooperation programmes in administrative, academic, scientific, linguistic, educational, audiovisual and cultural fields. As part of this, the cultural services of French Embassies abroad implement France’s policy to promote books and literacy.
